Introducing the i-MiEV
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation expects its new star vehicle, the all-electric i-MiEV, to revolutionise how the world thinks about the automobile. The pinnacle of Mitsubishi’s environmental technology, the i-MiEV is both highly efficient and environmentally friendly.
The i-MiEV is powered by a high-capacity lithium-ion battery, installed under the floor to provide optimal weight distribution and stability.
Lithium-ion batteries offer superior specific energy and power and longer life than other types of rechargeable batteries. They are almost entirely recyclable.
In parallel, Mitsubishi is exploring the potential of incorporating auxiliary solar panels and wind turbine fans in future research vehicles to maximise use of natural energy sources,
Benefits of electric vehicles
Mitsubishi believes the benefits of electric vehicles mark them out as a clean, highly viable mode of transport for the future:
-
Electric vehicles do not use petrol, or any other fossil fuels, and on the road emit no CO2. Even after factoring in emissions from generating the electricity the vehicle uses, they reduce CO2 pollution by more than two thirds that of an equivalent petrol-engined vehicle.
-
They have the unique advantage of using power sourced from a variety of fuels and renewable resources.
-
They are virtually maintenance-free: no oil changes, air filters, tune-ups, mufflers, timing belts, or emission tests. There are fewer moving parts to service and repair, so maintenance costs are lower.
-
They have no emissions system that could degrade or fail with time.
-
They provide a smooth, near-silent and vibration-free ride.
-
Widespread use of electric vehicles would reduce emissions of CO2, lessen cancer risk from exposure to toxic air contaminants such as benzene, and reduce consumption of and dependence on imported oil.
-
Discussion between Mitsubishi and New Zealand power companies points to the i-MiEV owner being able to sell back unused power into the national grid during periods of peak electricity demand, while the car is not in use.
