Introducing the 2012 Mitsubishi Challenger
Challenge the way you see an SUV
The Challenger is back. It’s bolder, better and brimming with new comforts. It’s got even more towing power - an impressive 3 tonnes. It has greater 4WD agility than its legendary predecessor. And now it’s equally at home on the road as it is off the beaten track.
Under the hood sits the revolutionary new 2.5 litre common rail intercooled turbo diesel engine. It’s cleaner, more fuel-efficient and delivers more power and torque.
Inside, a luxurious new interior offers the choice of leather trim and the choice of five (GLS) or seven seats (Exceed). Ease onto the road and you’ll wonder how a vehicle with so much clout can be so well behaved.
When the New Zealand outdoors call, Mitsubishi All Terrain Technology, including Active Stability Control - and that formidable engine - can take you, the family and the boat anywhere. Safety, confidence, power. Whatever you need from a vehicle, there is only one Challenger.
Technology and Convenience
The completely redesigned interior boasts a wealth of features, all geared towards your comfort. From the driver’s seat, you’re in control of it all. Buttons for cruise control, Bluetooth hands free connectivity and MP3 compatible audio system are at your finger tips on the steering wheel. The Challenger Exceed also comes with an auto dimming rear view mirror with reversing camera and reversing sensors.
Safety and Security
The new Challenger takes safety seriously. Its host of safety features lets you go further and stay the right way up. Challenger features Mitsubishi RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body construction, supported by collision absorbing joints, side impact bars and the use of high tensile steel. Which means it’s built tough.
The SmartBrake system ensures you come to a stop in an emergency situation while Multi-Mode ABS and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) stop the brakes locking up in tight situations. Active Stability and Traction Control keep the wheels turning in the tough stuff.
Challenger is packed with safety features throughout, and the cabin is no exception. Driver and front passenger airbags come standard with side and curtain airbags also available. Front seatbelt pretensioners keep the driver and passenger in their seat in the event of an impact. Child restraint points keep the young ones safe in the back seat.
Rear parking sensors are fitted for safe manoeuvring in tight spots, both around town and off-road.
Mitsubishi All Terrain Technology (MATT)
Mitsubishi brings you the latest safety systems and superior 4WD technology. Challenger boasts rally proven MATT (Mitsubishi All Terrain Technology) for the ultimate in on and off road driver confidence. When it comes to giving you superior control we’ve left no stone unturned.
MATT is an integrated package of systems centred on the on-board computer with sensors that monitor the constant change in your vehicle’s wheel speeds, lateral and longitudinal G forces and yaw rates. Processing this data it then matches it to the driver’s intention via the steering wheel and throttle sensors to provide optimum driving performance and driver confidence.
Mitsubishi All Terrain Technology includes:
Active Stability Control
Active Traction Control
Super Select Transmission
Multi-Mode-Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)
Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD)
Diff Lock (GLS model ony) |

Steering wheel mounted audio controls, Bluetooth & cruise control

Active Traction Control (ATC)
Active Traction Control helps you maintain traction on the most slippery or rugged surfaces. This intelligent system automatically controls the engine output, so driving wheels are prevented from spinning. Sensing loss of traction in an independent wheel, it applies braking force to the wheel and sends extra power and torque to other wheels with traction to keep you moving. |

Active Stability Control (ASC)
Active Stability Control provides the driver with greater control in tough cornering situations, reducing the chance of under-steer or over-steer by adjusting engine power and applying the brakes independently on each wheel. The result – a tighter, safer driving line. |

Multi-Mode Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD)
Challenger's intelligent 4 channel, 4-sensor braking system monitors different wheel speed and activates brakes to individual wheels when required. It allows you to keep manoeuvrability under heavy braking and slippery road conditions.
EBD detects when you are carrying passengers or heavier loads and automatically increases rear-braking force on demand. |
Off-Road / On-Road
As its name suggests, Challenger is up for anything. This is one 4WD that walks the walk however rough the path ahead. And wherever you go, it’s always in total comfort.
On-road or off-road, tackled with style.
Challenger’s mission is to bring you the best of town and country. As you cruise through the city, you’ll see how far this new model has come. Comfort, manoeuvrability and ease of driving are there in spades. The refined ride gives little indication of the serious off-road ability that’s waiting for you to wield.
The engine spins out a huge 133kW and 356 Nm of torque. This power is sent through the INVECS II 5 speed automatic transmission with Sports Mode. The result is a vehicle with the grunt to take you anywhere and bring you back in complete safety.
Super Select 4WD
The hard working Challenger inherits all the 4WD-handling heritage of the long line of Mitsubishi rally champions. Most 4WD systems have either part-time 4WD or constant 4WD, but with Super Select 4WD now available in Challeger, you will have the best of both worlds.
Four driving modes give you complete driving freedom: economical 2WD, full-time 4WD allowing you to drive in 4WD on any surface, and traditional 4WD high and low range modes to take on any off-road situation. The Super Select 4WD system also offers the benefit of on-the-fly shifts from 2WD to 4WD high range at speeds of up to 100km/h.
5 Speed Sports Mode Automatic
Sports Mode allows you to enjoy the ease and comfort of an automatic, with the option of then switching to the versatility and control of a 5-speed manual. Use the gear level or steering column mounted paddle shifters to change up and down gears without the use of a clutch pedal. The clutch free operation reducers the rev and torque loss usually associated with engaging gears, meaning you can maintain momentum in off-road situations
Powerful Towing Capability
Challenger is equipped with a powerful 3,000kg towing capacity. The turbo-diesel engine and full time 4WD capability will make towing the boat, caravan or trailer on your next family adventure a breeze.
2.5L Common Rail High Power Turbo-Diesel Engine
Challenger offers the latest in common rail turbo-diesel technology. An enhanced variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) works to optimise the turbine flow rate in order to achieve high torque at low speeds and maximised power at high speeds. The result is excellent emission control fuel efficiency and high engine power for superior performance. The 2.5 litre turbocharged diesel engine yields next generation quietness, smoothness and fuel efficiency taking you further for less without compromise, with an impressive 133kW of power and 356Nm of torque. |

Rear Diff Lock (GLS models only)
Challenger GLS is fitted with a rear differential lock to provide superior traction for heavy duty four wheel driving. When locked, both wheels receive the same amount of driving force, regardless of surface – meaning maximum possible traction in difficult situations.
Super Select 4WD

2H (2WD High Range)
When you’re cruising down the highway or just going across town, 2H shifts you into rear-wheel drive for smooth, quiet, fuel-efficient
performance). |

4H (Full-Time 4WD)
When the weather turns bad or the road gets rough, get added traction in 4H mode. This 4WD control has the flexibility of a centre differential with viscous coupling unit, providing excellent traction in unpredictable road conditions or volatile surfaces. |

4HLC (4WD High Range with Locked Centre Differential)
Keeping you on track in rugged or slippery conditions, 4HLC distributes power equally to all four wheels to meet off-road challengers with a steady sense of control. |

4LLC (4WD Low Range with Locked Centre Differential)
Switch to 4LLC when you need all the tractor-like crawling power your Triton GLS 4WD is capable of. Maximum low-end torque pulls you through even the roughest terrain, stickiest mud and deepest snow. |
Mitsubishi Challenger Exceed
